United through diversity... it is our mission to:
The Community Action Network (CAN) was founded by Locals 175 & 633 of the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) in January 2006. The committee is made up of Locals 175 & 633 staff and members who are proud of Canada’s union tradition. Many of our parents and grandparents fought hard to earn the respect and working conditions they deserve. Union members earn good wages and benefits because they stand together as a unified group in solidarity. Solidarity is integral to achieving good contracts. A union requires the support of all members in each workplace in every sector. Many newcomers to Canada are not aware of the labour laws in place in this country. They are not necessarily made aware of their right to unionize or of any Employment Standards Act (ESA) regulations meant to protect Ontario workers. The Community Action Network (CAN) aims to unite our members through their diversity. Many Locals 175 & 633 members already belong to groups within their own communities and CAN will more formally link our Local Unions with those diverse groups across Ontario.
